Call for Abstracts-Anthropology Southern Africa Annual Conference 2010

Social anthropology in Southern Africa has always had a strong fieldwork tradition. In fact, the quality of our fieldwork has been one of the reasons why the work of social anthropologists in this region has been so enduring and influential. Lynn Schumaker (2001) wrote that when Max Gluckman was Director of the Rhodes Livingston Institute in the 1950s he would often visit his colleagues at their field sites rather than in their offices to discuss their work.

Telkom Centre of Excellence students win the Best Paper Award at the IST Africa 2010 Conference

DURBAN- The IST Africa 2010 Conference Organizing and Programme Committees recently honored five Masters students from the University of Fort Hare who are working under the Telkom Centre of Excellence hosted in the Department of Computer Science.  They won the Best Paper Award, for their submission entitled 'Technology Solutions to Strengthen the Integration of Marginalized Communities into the Global Knowledge Society'.

The16th South African Sociological Association (SASA) Congress

The SASA Congress is a national, annually-held conference, which attracts in the region of 200 to 250 scholars and researchers from around the world. At the Association's 2009 Annual General Meeting (held at the XV Congress and hosted by the University of the Witwatersrand), East London was chosen as the venue for the 2010 Congress. The University of Fort Hare has graciously accepted to host this prestigious event at East London's newly-built International Conference Centre.

EAST LONDON-The University of Fort Hare has once again made a significant contribution in generating knowledge and credible information to assist with the country's development and address knowledge gaps within the public sector.

Fort Hare-Florida link strengthens Farmer to Farmer training programme

The University of Fort Hare and the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) strengthened links when a fifth specialist volunteer, specializing in farm-related bookkeeping and finances, Ray Williams, arrived recently to bring capacity to the agricultural based cooperatives at Fort Hare.

Fort Hare residence students engage in community work.

Two University of Fort Hare residences on the Alice campus, Elitheni and Elukhanyisweni, have become involved in community work as part of their responsibilities to enhance broader university community engagement  as one of the pillars of higher learning institutions.

The warden of Elitheni, Ms Nonzukiso Tyilo, took her students away from their books to Bongolwethu Pre-School in the nearby Njwaxa location to hand out toys and library books for the 32 children under that roof.

VC’s Emerging Researcher Award (2010)

Staff members and students in the Department of Livestock and Pasture Science wish to congratulate their Head of Department, Dr Voster Muchenje, for getting the Vice Chancellor's Emerging Research Award. This award is based on the quality of research outputs, including publications and presentations at conferences, contribution to research programmes or projects, involvement in teaching research and supervising students' research and recognition by peers.
